With the addition of Bicing, Barcelona has become one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world.  Its creation was intended as a form of short-distance public transportation to alleviate inner-city pollution, congestion, and noise.

To use Bicing, you must sign up for a membership online or in the Bicing office. A DNI/NIE number and a valid shipping address in Spain to receive the membership card must be provided, thus discouraging touristic use of the bicycles.  As of 2009, the yearly membership fee cost 30€.  Bikes may be checked out for 30 minute intervals at no additional charge.  The member can continue to use the bike for a charge of 0,50€ for each subsequent 30 minute interval for up to 2 hours, after which the rate increases to 3€/hr.  If the bike is not returned to a station within 24 hours, the member will be charged a fee of 150€.

Bicing is available for use 365 days a year.  From Sunday to Thursday, bicycles may be checked out between the hours of 5h – 24h; however, the stations will accept returns at anytime.  On Fridays and Saturdays, Bicing is open for use 24 hours.
