Costa Dorada

Costa Dorada meaning Golden Coast is made up of 20 towns and stretches for nearly 200 km southwest from Barcelona in the province of Tarragona. The region is quite different from its northern neighbor, Costa Brava. The coastline is less rugged, with endless miles of flat golden sandy beaches. The hue of the coastline’s fine sand has given the name to this wonderful area. Considerable effort is made in order to preserve its beauty and cleanliness. As a result many of Costa Dorada’s extensive beaches are awarded with European “Blue Flags” each year.

The region is composed of twelve zones namely Altafulla, Calafell, Cambrils, Coma-Ruga, El Vendrell, Hospitalet Infant, L’Ametlla de Mar, La Pineda, Miami Platja, Montbrio del Camp, Salou, and Tarragona, which is the capital of Costa Dorada.

Costa Dorada is worth visiting not only because of its golden sand beaches, but also because of its rich local culture and history. For example, the main regional city of Tarragona was an important army base in Roman times and today boasts historical ruins and a variety of museums.

Inland one can visit places and towns of great cultural and historical interest (Reus, Valls, Montblanc, Tortosa) and great medieval monasteries: Poble, Santes Creus and Scala Dei. Costa Dorada is also famous for its huge game reserves (Tivissa, Cardo, Ports de Tortosa); the unique delta of the Ebro river, with its labyrinth of ditches and lagoons and the facilities it offers for wild fowl hunting; and vineyards, that can be seen practically everywhere, as this region is home to some of Spain’s finest wines.

As well as Costa Brava, Costa Dorada is perfectly commutable through Reus and Barcelona airports, high-speed trains and superb motorways.
